The HDP is a miniature HD-SDI/SDI to DVI-D converter for LCD or Plasma monitors. Using a very high quality scaling engine, the HDP will automatically size 4:3 or 16:9 inputs to many DVI-D monitors (see Technical Note below). For appropriate monitor configurations, scaling is automatically 1 to 1 — for example, displaying 1920x1080 video on a WUXGA (1920x1200) monitor. The HDP will also automatically adapt the input frame rate for monitor compatibility. In addition, the HDP provides 2 channel RCA style audio monitoring and 2 looping outputs of the SDI inputs. HDP is the ideal solution for displaying SDI or HD-SDI on any LCD or Plasma DVI-D monitor.

Technical Note

The HDP is designed to work with most DVI-D monitors. The HDP uses the industry standard EDID communication protocol (within the DVI link) to communicate with the monitor, and then adjusts the HDP's internal scaling engine to scale the input video to the native resolution of the monitor. However, due to the hundreds of variations of DVI formats currently in use, proper operation with all monitors cannot be guaranteed. The HDP has 2 modes of operation that occur automatically, depending on what monitor it is attached to. These modes are Recommended Monitor Mode or VESA Mode.

Recommended Monitor Mode
For recommended monitors, there is custom firmware that will provide an accurate frame-locked image for all supported SDI and HD-SDI input formats. The HDP automatically determines the monitor it is connected to.

KONA LHe Hardware Acceleration

How Does KONA LHe Accelerate DVCPROHD, HDV & Apple's Dynamic RT?
Because KONA's precision hardware does part of the work, the G5 has more time available to process RT effects. This means more RT-effects power and more RT streams. Most broadcast codecs, including DVCPROHD and HDV, use a two-step process. The video is first scaled to a lower horizontal pixel count, and then the video is compressed. This is done because the slightly scaled video results in a favourable tradeoff between resolution and codec efficiency. KONA LHe's hardware not only dramatically speeds up the scaling part of the job, but it's also done with full 10-bit broadcast quality. When using the Final Cut Pro 5 HDV codec, KONA LHe's hardware acceleration allows instantaneous RT playback for both monitoring and recording. Even KONA's downconverter works in realtime with HDV, allowing SD monitoring, dubs or mastering. This KONA LHe functionality makes HDV a fully professional solution. The Panasonic DVCPROHD format takes advantage of KONA hardware as well. KONA's precision hardware allows capture and playback of HD-SDI video to and from the DVCPROHD codec at a quality level virtually indistinguishable from native FireWire, while freeing up valuable RT processing power.
