The MediaVault 4440 is a small, very high performance RAID disk system with quad 4Gb fibre channel controllers and 40 x 2.5" laptop SATA drives. It is capable of data rates in excess of 1.5GB/sec which is enough to playback one stream of 4k film resolution files, 2 streams of 2k resolution, or 4 streams of uncompressed HD 10 bit.
The MediaVault 4440 features up to 4 removable canisters (vPODs) each containing 10 fixed drives and RAID controller. The RAID controller supports RAID 0 and 6 modes of operation and has two 4Gbit Fibre Channel ports supporting daisy-chaining. As with all other models in the MediaVault family, RAID 6 operation ensures that capturing and processing is never unexpectedly interrupted. Each vPOD maintains performance with no degradation in performance or data loss if one drive fails.
However, RAID 6 uses two drives for redundancy (parity) information. This means that when a single drive failure occurs in a vPOD it remains redundant. Even with two failed drives in a vPOD there is no degradation in performance or data loss. This RAID design enables you to plan when a vPOD should be returned for repair as a single failed drive does not result is a loss in data, performance or even redundancy.
By combining performance with shock-resistant laptop drives and RAID 6 technology in a removable module, the vPODs offer the highest level of RAID protection and drive reliability in a portable form. vPODs can be moved between enclosures so they can be filled with data in one location, and the data processed into another location without having to transport the whole array. Also, array may be purchased partially populated should you not need the performance or capacity of a fully populated 4440 today. Additional vPODs can be purchased at a later date as your needs for performance and/or capacity change.
